Global Communication self-study module

We are all becoming much more closely connected, through the growth in global commerce combined with new communication technologies. But the human challenge remains: how to successfully interact with individuals across the world with widely different communication styles, preferences, expectations and cultural norms.

The Global Communication self-study module is an online resource that enables users to overcome the major barriers to creating shared understanding across cultural borders.

Who can benefit?

Managers and employees called upon to communicate effectively and generate shared understanding with colleagues, customers, partners and suppliers from across the world and with different communication styles and expectations.

How does it help the user?

The Global Communication self-study module enables users to:

  • Understand strategies for successful cross-cultural dialogue
  • Develop the skills to adapt written, spoken and body language to create shared understanding in a cross-cultural environment
  • Become more self-aware of their communication style and understand where adaptation may be required in a global context
  • Identify common barriers to global communication (e.g. age or gender bias, ethnocentrism, humour, stereotypes) and how to overcome them

How long does it take to complete?

Users can complete all four sections of the module in one session (approximately one hour) or revisit at their convenience to complete different sections. Users can also revisit the module as often as they wish within a 12 month timescale to refresh and consolidate their learning.

How does it work?

Availability: the Global Communication self-study module can be accessed on-demand 24/7 from any computer with an internet connection.

Interactivity: the module is split into four core sections. The first section examines what makes global communication successful and how culture influences communication style. The second introduces best practices for adjusting spoken, written and body language to maximum impact across different cultures. The third examines how to overcome common global communication barriers. Finally the fourth section is a quiz to test learning achieved and to consolidate key learning takeaways.

  • Scenario-based learning: questions and scenarios are presented to the learner during the module to test knowledge, attitudes and response. In this way, practical learning is achieved based on incidents and scenarios that reflect the real global workplace.
  • Interactive, user-friendly experience: the module incorporates voice commentary by a TMA World teamwork consultant, in addition to interactive functionality throughout the tool, to ensure learning is maximized through an engaging and enjoyable user experience.
  • Global Readiness e-Portfolio: this module forms part of a series of online learning resources called the Global Readiness e-Portfolio. Users can complete other modules in the series depending on their individual learning needs, and so build the broader skills to be successful on the global stage.
